Reading of the First Chapter
– in which Lucy gets a wedgie,
and it’s the best part of her week so far…
In this hopeful queer time-travelling love story, Lucy is destined to save the whole world – okay, Vancouver – from the apocalypse. But does she really have to leave the love of her life to do it? And what’s with all the goats?
Lucy’s ex-girlfriend is missing, her heart is broken, and her shoes are way too slippery when she hits her head and wakes up 500 years in the future. The future, if that’s what it is, is perfect. Vancouver is an eco-paradise, complete with renewable energy, a gift economy, and a smart, hot historian with a big secret. Lucy’s ex is not so lucky.
However, back in the present, her gay best friend is about to be arrested for her murder, and the ancestors of people she now loves will never be born. Will Lucy stay with her true love in paradise or lose everything to save them all?
If you’ve ever worried about how we could possibly thrive after everything the world is throwing at us from pandemics to climate change, this is for you. Sprinkled with nerdy nuggets of seismology, quantum entanglement, and temporal uncertainty for extra seasoning. But goats eat everything, right?

This story follows the time-travelling adventures of Lucy, a woman fresh from a recent breakup who’s transported into a hopeful but uncertain future. We follow Lucy as she journeys into a version of Vancouver where urban goats and quantum computing coexist harmoniously. While the opening chapter features a confusing cast of new characters, the book quickly finds its stride. I enjoyed stepping into the world, which offered an unusual blend of the romantic, mystical, philosophical and pragmatic. The characters were realistic and engaging, with a steamy queer romance subplot. The story explores the meaning of community and offers inspiration for anyone considering alternative family structures. If you’d enjoy a vision of the future that isn’t only dystopian doom, this book’s well worth your time. Warning: you may find yourself googling goat facts after you finish reading it.

A Fantastic Summer 2025 Read
The story starts with a tough breakup, and then takes you on a time-travel adventure to a future world after an environmental disaster. What begins as a heartbreaking journey slowly turns into this sweet love story, with plenty of humour. I really loved how the book shows an alternate world – loving, chosen families, especially with the focus on communal living and parenting. It’s the perfect way to escape the rightwing madness of 2025—refreshing, hopeful, a queer-friendly future that feels full of possibilities. – Kat
